At Creative Asphalt, we recently partnered with Legacy Packing, a prominent fruit grower in Dinuba, CA, to help them expand their operations with a new parking lot. Their growing business required additional parking space, and we were tasked with creating a 20,000-square-foot lot that would be durable, cost-effective, and suitable for the agricultural environment. After evaluating the options with the client, we decided to use asphalt millings as the main material for the project. This approach fit their needs and offered several key advantages over traditional paving methods like hot mix asphalt.
Asphalt millings are ideal for clients in agricultural industries or those looking for an economical alternative to more expensive paving methods. Not only are millings more affordable, but once compacted and treated with road oil, they harden over time to form a solid, durable surface. This makes them perfect for fruit growers’ parking lots or long rural driveways. The benefits don’t stop there—millings are less dusty than alternatives like crushed granite, making them a cleaner option, especially in areas where heavy machinery and vehicles frequently move in and out.
We started the project by clearing the area, which included removing an existing chain-link fence. Once the site was cleared, we graded the entire area to create a smooth, even foundation. Proper grading is essential to ensure the longevity and performance of the parking lot, as it helps with water drainage and prevents pooling that could damage the surface over time.
After preparing the site, we laid down over 200 tons of asphalt millings, spreading them evenly to a depth of 3 inches across the entire 20,000-square-foot area. Compaction was the next crucial step, as it helps the millings bond together, forming a sturdy base for the parking lot. By compacting the millings thoroughly, we ensured the lot would have the strength and durability needed to support regular traffic from cars, trucks, and agricultural equipment.
The following day, we applied SC-800 road oil over the compacted millings. This oil acts as a binder, helping to lock the millings together and further harden the surface. Road oil plays a crucial role in increasing the longevity of the surface, making it more resilient against the wear and tear of daily use.
After allowing the oil to set into the millings for two weeks, we returned to stripe the lot. Proper striping is essential for maximizing the use of the parking area and ensuring that vehicles park in an organized and efficient manner. The new parking area is now fully functional and tailored to meet Legacy Packing’s operations' unique needs.
By choosing asphalt millings, we delivered a cost-effective and durable solution that met the client's needs without compromising on quality. The result is a parking lot that will serve Legacy Packing for years to come, with minimal maintenance and excellent performance. This project underscores our commitment at Creative Asphalt to providing flexible, long-lasting paving solutions for all our clients.
